The Bushwick Collective

ArtVenture NYC Editorial Staff

The Bushwick Collective, founded in 2012 by Joseph Ficalora, has turned sections of the industrial Brooklyn neighborhood into one of New York City’s most vibrant open-air street art environments. Working primarily in large-scale aerosol and stencil techniques, artists from around the world have transformed the neighborhood’s walls into a constantly evolving gallery. What began as a local initiative has grown into one of the largest curated networks of murals by international and New York–based artists in the city.

One of the defining qualities of the Bushwick Collective is that the artworks are replaced regularly, reflecting the roots of street art. This turnover keeps the streets visually dynamic while preserving the spirit of graffiti culture. The result is a neighborhood that continues to evolve and has become a major destination for street art tourism. Because of its scale and visibility, the Collective also plays a role in the wider conversation and ongoing debates about the institutionalization of street art in contemporary cities.
